Royal Ashburn Golf Club traces back to 1959, when Wilson Paterson and Bill Ogle bought farmland in Durham Region and built what opened in 1962 as an 18-hole course. The club changed names twice over the decades — first Whitby Golf Club, then Thunderbird Golf Club — before becoming Royal Ashburn in 2000, marking a 1999 visit from Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and the Ashburn community's anniversary that year. Paterson kept reworking the layout himself for years afterward, continually adjusting playability and aesthetics. Today it's a Wilson Paterson–designed semi-private par-72 course with a performance centre covering club fitting, adult programs, junior golf, and ladies instruction. Daily-fee public play is available alongside memberships, leagues, and a driving range and restaurant on site.
